What is Kirtan/Chanting?
Experience the power of music to relax the mind and uplift your spirit! Chanting can be thought of as affirmations set to music, and brings about a meditative state through the repetition of simple melodies and the power to open your heart. Yogananda said "chanting is half the battle," because it easily brings you to a state of inner peace, even for the beginner. The songs for chanting are in unison, easy to follow, and most are in English, and some may be in Sanskrit. You don't need to be a good singer--just a willingness to experience the powerful vibrations of this music! There are usually a couple brief, guided meditations during the chanting.

The White Light Kirtan Band is composed of students from the Ananda Living Wisdom High School in Nevada City, California. They have been performing together for 3 years and have produced two CDs. Their music is an energetic blend of Eastern and Western chanting styles.
Six teenage boys from the school and the band are on a three week Service Adventure on the East Coast. In addition to leading kirtans they have been helping out at two spiritual communities, Cite Ecologique in Quebec and the Himalayan Institute in Pennsylvania.
After the kirtan they will be happy to talk with you about what it is like to attend a spiritual high school. The school website can be found at livingwisdom.org.
